Luzerne County Library System Celebrates 40 years of county-wide service!
The Luzerne County Library System is proud to announce they are celebrating their 40th Anniversary! In 1984, the following 10 independent libraries in Luzerne County came together to provide expanded materials and services to the citizens of Luzerne County Pennsylvania and beyond:
- Back Mountain Memorial Library, Dallas
- Hazleton Area Public Library, Hazleton (main library and four branches)
- Hoyt Library, Kingston
- Marian Sutherland Kirby Library, Mountain Top
- Mill Memorial Library, Nanticoke
- Osterhout Free Library, Wilkes-Barre (main library and three branches)
- Pittston Memorial Library, Pittston
- Plymouth Public Library, Plymouth
- West Pittston Library, West Pittston; and
- Wyoming Free Library, Wyoming
Over the past 40 years, public libraries have gone from repositories for books and other print material to civic centers, evolving to meet the needs of our communities. While our traditional services have remained the same, public libraries offer public access to audio-visual collections, digital resources like databases and eBooks, programs for learning and enjoyment, learning spaces, and computers and Wi-Fi. Our libraries give the public an opportunity to meet new people while learning new skills. Individuals and families spend time at their libraries with educational and entertaining programming for patrons of all ages.
To celebrate, every library and their branches will be celebrating with treats for our patrons. System members will mark the 40th anniversary of the Luzerne County Library System on October 29 at 2:00 p.m. Each library will offer a slice of birthday cake and commemorative bookmarks until supplies run out. Please check with your local library for specifics on their celebration date.
